Ingredients which are used in dal makhni recipe

  • lentils-urad dal (1 cup)
  • Red Kidney beans (Rajma 1/4 cup)
  • Cream/ malai homemade
  • Kasuri methi /dried fenugreek leaves
  • onion
  • tomato
  • salt
  • bay leaf
  • green cardoman
  • black cardamon
  • Garnish dhania

Let’s start with Dal makhni recipe

Dal makhni is famous dish of punjabi family and generally served with tandoori roti , butter naan , jeera rice or plain basmati rice. So come let’s start.

First of all rinse urad dal and rajma few times , soak both of them overnight uncovered or you may pour boiling water and soak for 4 hours. After soak , drain water and pour fresh water 4 cups

now it’s ready to cook on medium hear for 10 whistles. It takes about 40-45 min.

after this check if it is cooked or not after pressure releases naturally. It should be soften and be mashed with hand easily.

while dal cooks , prep up with following ingredients:

  • Fine chop 1 small to medium onion to make about 1/2 cup chopped.
  • 1 tablespoon ginger & garlic paste
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • Heat a heavy bottom pot with 2 tablespoon ghee
  • Add 1 bay leaf , 1 black cardomon & 2 green cardomon
  • when they begin to sizzle,add 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • saute until golden/light brown for 8-9 min
  • pour 1 cup tomato puree and saute 4-5 min
  • stir in 1 tablespoon sea salt and 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  • Stir in 1 teaspoon kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

let’s masala cook well until it turns thik for 5 min . Masala is ready to smell good when done.

  • Now mash the cooked lentils slightly and transfer to pot along with Dal
  • stir well & Add 1 cup hot water. Cook slowly to avoid burning
  • after 60 mins, you need another half to 1 cup hot water & let it cook until dal thickens.
  • continue to cook on low flame to avoid burning
  • Taste dal makhni to adjust salt & garam masala
  • crush 1 teaspoon Kasuri methi and add it here for good smell
  • Now finally stir 1/4to1/3 cup heavy cream for another 8-10 mins
  • then stir in 3 tablespoon unsalted Butter . Turn off heat.

Now it’s ready to serve . Garnish chopped dhaniya at last and Garnish dal makhani with cream & butter before serving.
